The Competition

Welcome to the contest where middle and high school students can become inventors and learn about the wondrously strange creatures of the deep sea at the same time!

Contestants draw inspiration from deep sea creatures and their biology and find a creative use case for a unique ability or attribute from the creature. Contestants can express their idea with a picture, video, diagram or written description of their final design. Creativity encouraged!

Participants must be in grades 6-12 or the home school equivalent to participate.

In the bathypelagic zone (1,000–4,000 metres deep) there is no natural light. Bioluminescence pierces the darkness. The scarcity of food leads to strange organisms like the Hydrozoa Aegina citrea above.
